YOU REALLY DON'T NEED A COFFEE TABLE IN YOUR LIVING ROOM!

My Kid Friendly Living Room Doesn’t Have A Coffee Table- (And I totally don’t miss it!)

As I have been putting together my new house one layer at a time- I have gone back and forth on weather or not I actually need a coffee table, and you know what, I totally don’t! We have an active 2 year old, an 85lb Black Lab/ Rottweiler / Pit bull Mix and 2 crazy cats- so function is way more important for our lifestyle.

As I work thru my punch list of decor that I want to add to my new house, I am finally seeing everything come to light. We have painted almost every room on the first floor, I have purchased a rug, new wall decor and a couple of rugs- everything is finally come into place. But the one thing that I had always gone back and forth on was if I wanted to add an ottoman on casters to move around the room or a hard top coffee table. Truth be told, we f*cking LIVE in our living room. We eat here, we work here, we relax here so moving a hard top coffee table any time we want to jam out to some Baby Shark, build a pillow fort or drag out a Gazillion toys to play with at once, just isn’t realistic!

So I’m substituting! We have nesting tables in the corner with a lamp on it, I pull out the bottom one to use as a TV tray- and I have a C shape side table that tucks under the sectional- This one I leave out because I can easily move it around or tuck it under the sofa if we are using the floor space.

If you have a young and active family like us- maybe its time to ditch the traditional coffee table and change the way you live in your space!

Our living room is a part of a big L shape with the dining room being in the back corner of the room. The living room has a half wall to the staircase- and as responsible parents, we figured we’d not put the sectional up against that wall so our toddler can’t crawl on the top and flip over the wall onto the staircase. Yes, the flow would be SOOO much better but our kid is safe now by using it on the other side of the room. The space overall isn’t terribly big, its about 15’x20’ with a walking path thru it and designated kid space behind the floating sectional. IF you have a larger area then you may consider keeping something you can easily move around so the room doesn’t feel like its missing anything. Its really a functional piece that will fill out the room properly.

With my husband being a Senior Executive Chef for a major college- he is all about cleanliness and organization, as I am being an Interior Designer. If you have checked out my previous post about how I organized my life when we moved across the country(Tips to Declutter & Transition With Your New House)- then you know I am hyper focused on the ease and function of a space. My kid has a shit load of toys- as any kid does, right? So how do we hide them and still maintain our family space with out them intruding? As design becomes more refined and lifestyle oriented but still on trend- I am finding new creative ways to omit the clutter and make spaces livable and functional. In our living room I have my old toy box (hand painted by my Grandma when I was a kid). Its a beautiful wood piece that we keep near half wall opposite the stairs- and my daughters activity table where she her snacks and does some artwork. But behind the sectional, that’s where all the kid stuff is hidden, this way when you walk into the space you aren’t inundated with kid crap right off the bat! I just added the bookcase (that I recently obtained from my Grandparents) to house all her books with baskets below for her toys. Next to it is a vintage wooden beer box for her “small” toys. Behind the sofa, instead of a console table (for the time being) are her shopping carts and baby strollers- below eye level and out of site!
