How to Choose Paint Colors That Go Together
How to Choose Paint Colors That Go Together
The biggest question I get from my clients is where to even start. They have scoured Pinterest and know what they kind of like- but there are so. many. Pins! They don’t know where to even start to pull it all together.
Start with one thing you LOVE, this can be a piece of Art, a pillow, a piece of furniture, a rug. Chances are, you have come across SOMETHING that you just totally love but you don’t know how it will work in the room so you just stare at it- longingly- hoping it will just work in the room with all the other stuff you find in your endless shopping. Praying, it will all come together somehow.
Start with one thing you LOVE. Plain and simple. What pattern, pillow, curtain, artwork, or piece of furniture do you WANT in the room?
MY COLOR FORMULA:
You will see my personal formula for starting a color palette. Typically there are 1 or 2 bold colors. 1 is a dark neutral and the other is a pop of color. They are paired with two lighter colors. One of those is typically a neutral white, cream or gray. The other accompanies the dark pop of color.
Below you will find a few color palette ideas to get you started. I’ve also included 1 element that you can order now to start your project!

Blue, Blush and Cream Color Scheme
Perfect for Guest Bedrooms, Girls Bedrooms, Living Rooms, Offices & More!
I Love this color palette! It’s so Fresh and crisp and sophisticated. The warm blush complements the gray/blue cool accent color. The overall larger pieces in the room will be neutral with this elegant color palette.
Neutral doesn’t necessarily mean white or cream! You can use this gray/blue color as the large neutral element in the room, like a sofa or sectional. Then you can add blush, cream and light gray pillows, rugs and paint colors.
Mix up patterns and solid fabrics and wallpapers to add different layers to your room- this will make it look collected and lived-in.

Navy, Saddle Brown, Cream and Gray Color Scheme
Perfect for Living Rooms, Master Bedrooms, Boys Rooms, Basements & More!
A rug ties everything in the room together. It’s kinda a big deal! You can use an area rug as your main piece of inspiration.
You don’t have to have ALL the colors in your desired color palette in the rug. But having at least 2-3 of them is helpful so you can tie in other accents like pillows, throw blankets and other colorful accessories.
Start with a neutral larger piece sitting on top of the area rug. You can do a light or dark neutral color that ads as a backdrop for your accessorized color palette.

Light Blue, Neutral Gray and Light Gray Color Scheme
Perfect for Bathrooms, Guest Bedrooms, Master Bedrooms, Offices & More!
There is no right or wrong way to do a coastal/ beachy color scheme! I LOVE to use pictures from my vacations to the Virgin islands, Mexico and the Bahama’s as inspiration for my color palette. I choose from 1-5 different variations of blue/green colors.
Then pair the blues with rich grays or black accents. You can also keep furniture light and airy with slipcovers that you can throw in the wash.
If you choose a light accent chair with a pop of color from your color palette- like this one- you can use a darker large furniture piece or rug to contrast the lighter chairs. A nice charcoal sofa or sectional would pair nicely with this chair. You can add white, gray, cream and various blue pillows and decor elements to the room.
Mix in some driftwood inspired wood-grains as well!

This color palette is so versatile! It can go on the more contemporary side OR boho-modern farmhouse depending on the application.
Rich velvet with this shade of green add a luxurious elegance to any contemporary design.
Mixing the gray/ cream and charcoal through tribal, stripe or buffalo check patterns with pops of green tend to run more modern farmhouse.
